Common questions

Is the "8 glasses a day" rule accurate?

It's a reasonable starting point but not based on science. A better baseline is 30–40 ml per kg of bodyweight, plus an extra 500 ml per hour of training, plus 500 ml in hot climates.

Does coffee or tea count?

Yes. Despite myths, moderate caffeine has only a mild diuretic effect, and the net hydration from coffee, tea or unsweetened soft drinks is positive.

Can I drink too much water?

Yes — over-hydration (hyponatremia) is rare but possible, especially during endurance events. Don't force-drink past your thirst, and replace electrolytes when sweating heavily.
